Mokwana’s Esperance Parts Ways With Coach
Elias Mokwana’s club Esperance de Tunis has amicably parted ways with coach Miguel Cardoso and his technical team following a slow start to the 2024/25 Tunisian Professionnelle Ligue 1 campaign.
The Portuguese mentor, appointed in January 2024 on a deal that was supposed to run until June 2026, was relieved of his duties after scoring eight points in five matches—winning two, drawing two, and losing one this past weekend.
This form has placed the Taraji in position six on the standings, seven points behind leaders Olympique de Beja, as they are on a three-game winless run, with two consecutive draws before the 1-0 loss to ES Zarsis in their last encounter. The 52-year-old won the Tunisian top-flight championship last season.
It led the team to their first CAF Champions League final in five years at the expense of Mamelodi Sundowns in the semifinals but lost to Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly in the penultimate game. Now, Mokwana, who signed for the Tunis-based giants in the off-season, will work under Iskandar Al- Qasri who has been appointed on an interim basis as the club continues its search for a new head coach.
The Bafana international will welcome the fresh start as it presents a new opportunity to establish himself in the team having failed to stake his claim under Cardoso, with all of his five appearances for the club coming from the bench.
