Mokwena Issues Farewell Statement After Leaving Sundowns
Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena released a three-page farewell message to the club and its supporters following his departure on Wednesday.
Mokwena’s exit comes after a successful four-year stint at Chloorkop. Notably, his last season (2023/24) marked his first and only full campaign as the team’s head coach. During his tenure, he secured three PSL Coach of the Season awards: two as the sole coach and one shared with Manqoba Mngqithi and Steve Komphela.
Reports suggest the reason for his departure is a breakdown in the relationship with the club’s sporting director, Flemming Berg. Their visions for Sundowns’ future, particularly regarding player recruitment for the upcoming season, reportedly clashed.
In his emotional farewell letter, Mokwena expresses his surprise at the timing and nature of his departure.
The former Chippa United coach goes on to express his gratitude to Sundowns chairman Tlhopie Motsepe, the entire Motsepe family, and the Chloorkop staff, thanking them for their “unwavering support.”
Mokwena extends heartfelt words of appreciation to his players, acknowledging their significant contribution to his successful time at the club.
Across his 91 games in charge, Mokwena steered Sundowns to an impressive 65% win rate. They secured 60 victories, suffered only nine defeats, and drew 22 matches. Under his leadership, the team scored 163 goals while conceding just 59.
