Moloisane Called Up To Bafana Squad For Crucial Rwanda Clash

Defender Thabo Moloisane has been called up to the Bafana Bafana squad for their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Rwanda on Tuesday.

The Stellenbosch FC defender replaces Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who was sent off during South Africa’s goalless draw against Zimbabwe at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.

Mbokazi, who has been outstanding for Orlando Pirates this season, lost his composure in stoppage time and was shown a red card by Algerian referee Mustapha Ghorbal.

His suspension left coach Hugo Broos short of defensive options, prompting the call-up of Moloisane, who was initially part of the preliminary squad.

Moloisane joins the team ahead of what is now a must-win encounter against Rwanda, who lost at home to Benin on Friday.

That defeat for Rwanda has further complicated South Africa’s qualification hopes. Despite dominating Zimbabwe and “throwing the kitchen sink” at them, Bafana were left frustrated — striking the post twice and seeing a goal-bound effort cleared off the line.

Bafana can still qualify for the World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA, if they beat Rwanda by two or more goals and Benin, who lead Group C with 17 points — two ahead of South Africa — lose to Nigeria.

Nigeria, currently third in the group, revived their qualification hopes after a 2-1 win over Lesotho in Polokwane. A victory for the Super Eagles against Benin in Uyo would secure their World Cup spot if Bafana Bafana fail to beat Rwanda in Nelspruit.
