Morris Steps In As Cape Town Spurs Coach Amidst Club Shake-Up

Former Bafana Bafana defender Nasief Morris has been appointed as the new coach for Cape Town Spurs for the upcoming season.

This move is part of a significant shake-up at the club, following the departure of Roger de Sa, who had joined Spurs as technical director in July but has now left to become assistant coach for Oman, reuniting with Carlos Queiroz.

Roger de Sa’s Reunion with Carlos Queiroz

De Sa and Queiroz share a long history, having worked together on several occasions. Their collaborations include a stint with Bafana Bafana, where De Sa served as goalkeeper coach, and with Portugal, where De Sa was a consultant for Queiroz during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

They also led Egypt to the Africa Cup of Nations final in 2022, where they narrowly lost to Senegal. Their partnership extended to the Iranian national team, guiding them to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. They parted ways with Qatar in December 2023, before De Sa took on the assistant coach role at Cape Town City last season.

However, Cape Town City unfortunately could not retain its status, losing in the mini-league playoffs to Orbit College, who subsequently earned promotion. De Sa had joined Spurs just last month, with the club hoping to purchase a Motsepe Foundation Championship status after being relegated to the ABC Motsepe Regional League in Cape Town. His recent departure to join Queiroz in Oman has opened up the coaching position for Morris.

Morris’s Return to Spurs

Morris, who enjoyed a successful career in Greece with Panathinaikos and also played for Spurs’ city rivals Santos and SuperSport United in his later career, is no stranger to Cape Town Spurs.

He previously served as an assistant coach when the club was in the Motsepe Foundation Championship under Shaun Bartlett. He is now replacing coach Ernst Middendorp, under whose tenure Spurs faced relegation twice—first from the Betway Premiership and then last season from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Spurs Come to Terms with ABC Motsepe League Status

Meanwhile, Sportswire has learned that Cape Town Spurs has finally accepted their situation of playing in the ABC Motsepe League in Cape Town next season.

The club, having failed to secure the Motsepe Foundation Championship status, has held a meeting with all players, informing them that they will not receive the same salaries they earned during their time in the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season.

Sportswire attempted to reach Spurs’ CEO Alexi Efstathiou for comment, but he was unavailable.
