Motaung Calls Velebayi A Great Addition

Kaizer Chiefs’ Sporting Director, Kaizer Motaung Jr., is celebrating the club’s successful signing of the highly-rated attacker, Asanele Velebayi, stating that he will add significant value to the team.

Velebayi was officially unveiled by the Soweto giants on Tuesday, following a successful legal battle with Cape Town Spurs at the PSL’s Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC).

Spurs had argued that Velebayi was not a free agent and demanded a transfer fee, even though the club was relegated to the amateur ABC Motsepe Regional League last season. The Mother City club valued Velebayi at approximately R10 million and insisted that Chiefs should pay this amount to secure his services.

Velebayi contested this claim, aligning with the PSL rule that declares a player a free agent if their club is relegated to an amateur league, specifically one outside of the Betway Premiership or Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Amakhosi had been keenly interested in Velebayi since the beginning of last season and had been waiting for the outcome of his legal dispute. The club is also interested in another player, Luke Baartman, who is in a similar legal situation. Baartman’s case is expected to be heard soon, and Spurs are likely to lose that matter as well, based on the same PSL DRC rule.

“We are happy to finally have Asanele with us,” said Kaizer Motaung Jr. “He is a great addition, and we believe he will add significant value because he is a perfect fit for our game model and the culture we have here at the club.”

Velebayi is the seventh signing for Chiefs this season, joining Nkanyiso Shinga, Ethan Chislet, Flavio Silva, Paseko Mako, Thabiso Monyane, and Siphesihle Ndlovu.

Amakhosi, who began the season with a win against Stellenbosch on Sunday, is scheduled to host Polokwane City at FNB Stadium this Wednesday at 19:30.
