Chiefs Confirm Velebayi Signing

Finally, Kaizer Chiefs have secured the signing of Asanele Velebayi after a prolonged dispute with Cape Town Spurs that was resolved by the PSL’s Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) on Monday.
Although it was previously reported that Velebayi would be unveiled on Wednesday, the announcement was made ahead of schedule. The Amakhosi have been pursuing Velebayi since the beginning of last season, but Spurs seemed reluctant to lose their key player.
The dispute arose after Spurs were relegated from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to the ABC Motsepe Regional League. They argued that Velebayi was still under a professional contract, even though the club was no longer in the professional football leagues (the Betway Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship). Velebayi took the matter to the PSL DRC, seeking to be released as a free agent, and the player won the case.
“Chiefs Welcome Velebayi to Naturena,” the club announced in a statement. “We would like to announce the signing of Asanele Velebayi. The Cape Town-born winger has signed a long-term contract with the Club. Welcome to the Kaizer Chiefs family.”
Chiefs are now focused on completing the signing of Luke Baartman, with whom Spurs are also disputing the terms of his departure. Spurs are arguing that they deserve a transfer fee rather than losing him for free, as they did with Velebayi. Baartman’s PSL DRC hearing will be heard in due course, and should he also win his case against Spurs, he is expected to join the Amakhosi as well.
