Mothiba Dismisses PSL Links, Focused On European Return

South African striker Lebo Mothiba has emphatically denied rumors linking him with a return to the DStv Premiership.

The 28-year-old forward, recently released by French club RC Strasbourg, is determined to resume his European career after battling a knee injury this season. Despite limited playing time (15 appearances, three goals) due to fitness issues, Mothiba’s resolve to compete at the highest level in Europe remains strong.

“For now, everything is still between me and my agent,” Mothiba said.

“I will always have offers in Europe, but I’m not focused on clubs. I’m only focused on my injury, healing, and coming back fully fit.”

Mothiba’s dedication to recovery is evident. Since returning to South Africa, he has maintained a rigorous training schedule, working daily with only Sundays off to regain full fitness. This commitment underscores his determination to return to European football at his best.

“That’s why ever since I came back to South Africa I’ve been working every morning, every day,” he explained. “I only have off on Sunday.”

Addressing speculation of a potential move to the PSL, Mothiba was clear: “I haven’t spoken to any team here in South Africa. I don’t know what’s happening. My main focus is healing my knee, coming back, and continuing playing in Europe.”

The same injury sidelined Mothiba from Bafana Bafana’s recent bronze medal run at the Africa Cup of Nations in February. He did, however, feature in a 1-1 friendly draw against Ivory Coast last October.

Notably, Mothiba played a key role in Bafana Bafana’s 2019 AFCON triumph, setting up the winning goal against Egypt in the round of 16. He has a total of four goals in 14 appearances for the South African national team.
