Richards Bay Take Early Lead In PSL Promotion Playoffs

Richards Bay FC edged out University of Pretoria 1-0 in their opening match of the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs, grabbing a crucial advantage in their fight for top-flight survival.

The victory at King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday propels Richards Bay to the top of the mini-league standings with three points, level with AmaTuks who won their first game against Baroka FC.

Somila Ntsundwana’s first-half strike proved decisive for Richards Bay. He was afforded space and time to turn before unleashing a powerful shot past AmaTuks goalkeeper Edward Maova in the 22nd minute.

Despite conceding early, University of Pretoria dominated the second half but lacked the finishing touch to equalize. Delano Abrahams had a golden opportunity to put AmaTuks ahead but missed the target from close range.

Thabang Sibanyoni, AmaTuks’ leading force in the playoffs, also came close but was dispossessed inside the box before he could unleash a shot.

Richards Bay’s defense held firm under constant pressure in the second half, with coach Vusi Vilakazi securing all three points for the Natal Rich Boys.

The win gives Bay a significant advantage as they prepare to visit Baroka FC on Saturday. A victory in their next match would put them in a strong position to retain their top flight status.
