Nabi Discusses Impact Of Royal AM Situation

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has weighed in on the impact of the Royal AM situation, with any points for and against the KZN outfit now formally expunged after the club was officially booted out of the PSL.

The Shauwn Mkhize-owned club had been embroiled in a financial scandal for months, bringing the league into disrepute by failing to honor their fixtures after tax regulators, South African Revenue Services (SARS), froze MaMkhize’s assets in a bid to recoup an alleged R40 million in tax debt.

Thwihli Thwahla were last in action in December 2024 in a 3-1 defeat to TS Galaxy. As a result, the Board of Governors [BOG] ratified the decision to terminate Royal AM’s professional membership on the recommendation of the executive committee last month.

Now, the conclusion of the saga has led to an updated log table, which indicates that all teams will finish the 2024/25 campaign with 28 matches played. Moreover, this has affected teams such as Chiefs as they dropped out of the top eight following the nullification of their point against Royal AM.

While the majority of the South African football fraternity voiced displeasure on the sporting repercussions of the matter, the Amakhosi mentor says he is more concerned about the impact the circumstances had on the personnel at the beleaguered club.

“The impact has been negative or positive for any team in the PSL, the Royal AM situation, but I feel it’s the human side of the situation that has impacted me a lot because that team had players, had people in the back office that were working and getting their bread out of the work,” Nabi said.

“And for everything to stop in the middle of the season is very hard for those people who were counting on that [salary] for the livelihood of their families, and we feel that the biggest impact is on the families of the Royal AM players and the personnel.”

Chiefs are currently in ninth place in the Betway Premiership standings with 30 points gathered after 25 matches played. The Glamour Boys will face fierce rivals Orlando Pirates in a blockbuster Soweto derby clash at FNB Stadium on Saturday (15h00).

Furthermore, the Naturena-based outfit will battle against the Buccaneers in the Nedbank Cup final penciled for next Saturday, 10 May, at the renowned Moses Mabhida Stadium as they aim to end a decade-long trophy drought.
