Norway And England Pay Tribute To Bafana Star Jayden Adams

Norway and England held a poignant moment of silence before their 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday following the tragic passing of South African midfielder Jayden Adams.
The winner of the encounter will advance to the semi-finals to face either holders Argentina or Switzerland, while Spain and France are scheduled to contest the other semi-final on Tuesday.
A Tragic Loss Shakes the Football World
Adams, who featured in three group-stage matches during South Africa’s historic run to the World Cup knockout rounds, has shocked the global football community with his untimely passing at the age of 25.
Unconfirmed reports indicate the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder tragically took his own life. The tragic news follows a deeply difficult period for the young footballer, who also lost his grandmother during Bafana Bafana’s ongoing World Cup campaign in North America.
The highly talented midfielder enjoyed a meteoric rise in domestic and international football. After joining Mamelodi Sundowns from Stellenbosch FC during the second half of the 2024/25 season, Adams immediately helped the Tshwane giants secure the league title and the CAF Champions League, with the latter coming last term.
He was also an integral part of the Bafana Bafana squad that claimed a bronze medal at the 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations, concluding his international career with nine caps and one goal. Adams’ solitary international goal was against Lesotho during a friendly encounter ahead of the AFCON tournament.
Tributes Pour in for the Bafana Star
FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his profound sadness in an official statement:
“It’s so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign. My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates. The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.”
The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) also expressed deep devastation:
“Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large. We extend our deepest condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and all those whose lives he touched.”
SAFA and Domestic Giants React
South African Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan extended his condolences directly to Sportswire, reflecting on the immense emotional toll the young player faced while abroad.
“Our sincere condolences go to the family of Jayden Adams, Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder,” Jordaan stated. “Jayden made tremendous progress and earned his place in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup across Canada, Mexico, and the USA.
“While we were in the United States, we were informed about the loss of his grandmother. We are deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Jayden’s passing yesterday. He was one of the most talented footballers in our country. This is a tragic loss of a young man, and we express our sincere condolences to his family, as well as the football families of Stellenbosch and Sundowns. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Domestic powerhouses Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, alongside numerous Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs and international football institutions, have united in sending heartfelt messages of support to the Adams family and Mamelodi Sundowns during this time of mourning.
