Official: Hunt Appointed Durban City Head Coach

As anticipated, Gavin Hunt has been appointed as the new head coach of Durban City.

Hunt takes over from Simo Dladla, who departed the club at the end of last season after successfully guiding them from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to the Betway Premiership. Sportswire had previously reported that Hunt’s appointment was imminent following his return to Durban from the UK.

Durban City officially welcomed their new coach in a statement: “Citizens, let’s welcome Gavin Hunt. Our New Head Coach. Bringing a winning legacy to our team, our city. A new chapter begins.”

While Hunt boasts a distinguished career with four league titles, the exact length of his contract has not yet been revealed. He will be joined by Rowan Fernandez, a move previously confirmed by Sportswire, and Kaitano Tembo has been linked with an assistant coaching role.

Furthermore, Ernst Middendorp, who had four stints with Maritzburg before the club’s rebranding last season, is earmarked for the technical director position. The club is also expected to unveil new players soon in preparation for the upcoming season.

Hunt brings a wealth of experience, having coached numerous prominent clubs including Moroka Swallows, Black Leopards, SuperSport United (twice), Kaizer Chiefs, and Chippa United. His most recent coaching stint was with SuperSport United, where he was sacked in March of last season before the club’s sale.

Hunt’s first competitive outing with Durban City will be in the KZN Premier’s Cup, a pre-season tournament in July. Following the draw on Tuesday in Richards Bay, City is set to face Milford FC in a playoff match on 26 July at the Umhlathuze Stadium.
