Hunt To Finalize Deal With Durban City Next Week

Coach Gavin Hunt is expected to arrive in South Africa this Sunday from London to finalize terms with Durban City, as he has been away for the coaching course.

Durban City has been strongly linked with Hunt, who has been unattached since his departure from the now-defunct SuperSport United in March.

City earned promotion to the Betway Premiership last season after winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship under Simo Dladla. However, Dladla couldn’t agree on new terms for the upcoming season, leading to his departure and subsequent appointment as assistant coach at AmaZulu.

This paved the way for City to seek a new coach, and the club is confident that everything will be settled by the end of next week.

“Coach Hunt is arriving back in South Africa on Sunday and will then conclude terms with the club as soon as he returns,” a source confirmed. “But all signs indicate he will be announced on Tuesday.”

Regarding squad player acquisition to ensure the team is competitive in the Betway Premiership next season, Sportswire understands that Hunt will make those decisions alongside the club’s management once he lands in Durban.

It’s clear that Hunt will bring in his own technical team at City. Pitso Dladla and Macbeth Sibaya, who served as Simo Dladla’s assistant coaches last season, will be redeployed within the club.

Goalkeeper coach Mfanafuthi Gwala, who held the goalkeeping position last season, will not be retained. Hunt may opt for either Grant Johnson or Andre Arendse, both of whom he worked with at SuperSport, as his assistant and goalkeeper coaches.

There are also reports linking City with Ernst Middendorp for the role of technical director, but all these matters will be ironed out next week once Hunt arrives.

Hunt is expected to lead City for the first time at the KZN Premier’s Cup on 26-27 July. The draw for this pre-season tournament in KwaZulu-Natal is scheduled to take place in Richards Bay on Tuesday.
