Stellenbosch Defender Attracts Interest In UAE

Stellenbosch highly rated center-back Ismael Olivier Toure is on the radar of UAE Pro League outfit Baniyas SC, with the two clubs engaged in active talks over a possible transfer, Sportswire has been informed.

The towering ball-playing defender has been instrumental in the heart of Stellies’ defense, staking his claim in the starting XI since joining the club from then-relegated Marumo Gallants ahead of the 2023/24 Betway Premiership campaign.

On his debut season, Toure played a vital role in helping the Cape Winelands outfit clinch its first-ever major trophy in the South African top-flight division – the Carling Knockout Cup with a 5-4 penalty shootout victory at the expense of TS Galaxy.

Following his impressive exploits for Stellenbosch, the 27-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs last season, but a deal never materialized as the player continued to hone his craft in the mother city.

Now, information reaching this publication indicates that talks between Stellies and Baniyas are progressing well, with both parties open to a transfer, although there’s no green light to facilitate the Ivorian’s move at this stage.

Should the two teams agree on a transfer fee and payment structure, with the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finalists having reportedly inserted an R8 million release clause in the player’s contract, Toure will travel to the Middle East for a routine medical checkup.

The former ASEC Mimosas star made 42 appearances across all competitions for Steve Barker’s side last season. While he finished the term with no goal to his name, the highly sought-after player contributed two assists.

It remains to be seen whether Toure will be plying his trade in the Betway Premiership next season, with teams from Saudi Arabia and Qatar also circling. Stellenbosch has exported Olwethu Makhanya, Anicet Oura, and Antonio Van Wyk, amongst others, in recent times.
