Ouaddou: Mbokazi’s Performance Was Of European Stage

Orlando Pirates coach Abdelsam Ouaddou has lavished praise on Mbekezeli Mbokazi, stating that the young defender’s performance against Mamelodi Sundowns was worthy of a top European club.

Mbokazi, who was named Pirates’ vice-captain in the offseason, delivered a powerful performance in the thrilling 1-1 MTN8 semi-final first-leg draw at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

The 19-year-old was instrumental in the Buccaneers’ equalizer. His perfectly-weighted pass bypassed the Sundowns defense, setting up Kamogela Sebelebele for the goal. Mbokazi also showcased his strength and power, effortlessly fending off a challenge from Sundowns’ star forward Arthur Sales, who was left looking embarrassed.

When asked about the player at the post-match press conference, Ouaddou said he had to be “careful” with his praise but felt it was necessary to give credit where it was due.

“This guy, if he continues to work hard, if he continues to be professional, if he takes care of his lifestyle, everything, I think he has a great future,” Ouaddou said.

“What I have seen again today it’s just unbelievable. It’s a performance for big clubs in Europe, and we’re happy to have him in Orlando Pirates, a big club in Africa. He’s fantastic. “But he has to keep working, and this is a problem.”

Mbokazi, who was born in Hluhluwe, KwaZulu-Natal, has drawn comparisons to former Pirates captain and PSL Footballer of the Season, Mbulelo “Old John” Mabizela, who was also a teenage sensation before moving to Tottenham Hotspur.

Promoted to the senior team in March of last season, Mbokazi has already featured in 22 matches for the club and was named the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player.

Pirates will once again rely on Mbokazi’s grit and form as they prepare for a dangerous Sundowns side in the second leg of the MTN8 semi-final at Lucas Moripe Stadium next weekend.
