“Ox Needed Love Like Girlfriend”

Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Cedric Kaze believes Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s impressive form this season is the result of confidence — comparing it to “giving love to a girlfriend.”
Despite facing criticism from fans, Mthethwa has been one of the most consistent performers for Amakhosi, featuring in every match across all competitions this season.
Kaze used a striking analogy to describe his approach to managing the midfielder.
“I believe every player is like having a girlfriend; he needs to feel love,” Kaze said.
“The plan is to feel loved. He needs someone to take care of him, he needs someone to support him even when he’s not doing well.”
According to Kaze, when a player feels valued and supported, they are more likely to express themselves on the pitch, and the results will follow.
Mthethwa’s form has certainly justified Kaze’s approach. The former Stellenbosch midfielder has already picked up two man-of-the-match awards this season, one for his impressive display against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership and another against Stellenbosch in the Carling Knockout last 16, despite Chiefs ultimately losing on penalties.
One of the most notable moments of Mthethwa came when he played a crucial role in ending Chiefs’ 10-year trophy drought in May this year.
In the final of the Nedbank Cup against Orlando Pirates, Mthethwa blocked a shot from Mbekezeli Mbokazi that went to Glody Lilepo, who passed the ball to Mduduzi Shabalala, paving the way for Yusuf Maart to score the winning goal, assisted by Ashley Du Preez.
Kaze attributed Mthethwa’s success to the confidence he has gained from the coaching staff and his teammates.
“I think when the confidence is there, then the player can express himself, and I believe that’s the way we’ve been working with him and others, and that’s the results now,” he added.
The 31-year-old will be hoping to maintain his fine form when Amakhosi face AS Simba of Congo in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round after the FIFA international break.
