Petersen: We’ll Never Lose To Small Teams In Nedbank
Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen says what happened last season on Amakhosi in the Nedbank Cup will never happen this season because they want to show everybody that they are a big team.
Amakhosi were knocked out in the Last 32 of the Nedbank Cup by the Motsepe Foundation Championship team Milford last season on penalties.
This season, Chiefs got another lower-division side in the Last 32 of this competition as the draw was conducted on Thursday in Sandton. The Phefeni Glamour Boys will play against the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League side Free Agents.
Petersen, who last played in their 2-0 loss in December against Polokwane City, revealed how they are going to fix the issue of losing to ‘small teams’ in the Nedbank Cup this season.
“I think for us is just a matter of applying ourselves probably,” Petersen said.
“We will go out there to prove to anyone that the past is in the past, and we can change that. We will make sure on the day that we are a bigger team and we have a history in the Nedbank Cup.
“But at the end of the day, I think for us is to go to apply ourselves properly and turn our fortune around the season.”
Chiefs, who last won this cup in 2013, have also been knocked by many lower-division sides such as FC Cape Town, Baroka, and Black Leopards, amongst others.
Meanwhile, the former Bidvest Wits goalkeeper also added that there’s a lot of improvement in Amakhosi this season, despite that the results are not good.
“I think one thing I can say is that there’s a lot of improvement already, even though things haven’t been going the way we wanted to. I think people can see that the way we play something is happening, there’s an improvement,” Petersen added.
“So, hopefully, we can use this Cup to change everyone’s minds, to give everyone that faith and hope that we are still alive and this season we can prove anyone wrong.”
Petersen and his team Chiefs will now face the KwaZulu-Natal-based side Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership match at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday (15:30).
Amakhosi will have an extra motivation going to this game as they won against Stellenbosch on Wednesday.
