Pirates Bid Farewell To Makaringe

Orlando Pirates have announced the departure of midfielder Fortune Makaringe, ending a four-year stint with the club.

Makaringe, who joined Pirates from Maritzburg United ahead of the 2019/20 season, struggled to secure a regular starting position in the latter half of the last campaign.

While he initially saw significant playing time at right back during the first half due to Pirates’ defensive struggles in that area, his appearances became limited. He notably played in six consecutive matches between November and December of last year.

His final appearance for the club came on 29 December, in a 3-2 loss against Stellenbosch FC at Orlando Stadium, where he assisted Evidence Makgopa’s goal.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that Fortune Makaringe will be leaving the club,” a statement released by Pirates on Tuesday confirmed.

“Following four incredible seasons and over 140 matches, our journey with the 31-year-old midfielder has come to an end.

“We are immensely grateful for Makaringe’s professionalism and dedication throughout his time with the club. Words cannot fully express our appreciation.

“The club wishes him nothing but the very best in his future endeavors.”

Makaringe joined Pirates in 2019 alongside a wave of new signings, including Gabadinho Mhango, Tebogo Tlolane, Kabelo Dlamini, Bongani Sam, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Joris Delle, Austin Muwowo, and Tshegofatso Mabasa. Nkanyiso Zungu arrived later that season. Currently, only Dlamini and Mabasa remain from that influx of players.

Makaringe’s departure follows those of assistant coach Sergio Almenara and Cameroon striker Souaibou Marou, whose exits were confirmed on Monday.
