“Pirates Cannot Lose Riveiro Because He’s Good Human Being”

Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has joined Relebohile Mofokeng in praising his coach José Riveiro following the Buccaneers’ thrilling MTN8 victory against Stellenbosch FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, with the Spanish coach seeing his contract expire at the end of the season.
Pirates are sitting in a position of discomfort they have not been in recent years where they need to renew the contract of Riveiro, who added his third MTN8 trophy.
The night in Durban not only marked a memorable victory but also a testament to Riveiro’s continued influence on the team, having led the club to five cup triumphs since his arrival.
Mabasa, who was last season’s top goal scorer with 16 league goals, made a significant impact off the bench. He scored what was a contentious Pirates’ second goal, completing their comeback from 1-0 down before assisting Mofokeng for the third, sealing the 3-1 win.
When asked about the man behind Pirates’ tactical success, Mabasa spoke glowingly of Riveiro, crediting his personal and professional approach.
“He is a very good human being. He is like a father to every one of us and he believes in every one of us. Even after the game, he took me to the side and spoke to me. He told me, ‘Look, I told you that at the end of today, you will make a great impact in this game when the opportunity arises,’” said Mabasa.
Riveiro’s leadership has propelled the Buccaneers to new heights, making them the first team to win the MTN8 three times consecutively and securing five consecutive final victories under his watch.
Beyond the silverware, Mabasa emphasized how Riveiro has fostered a strong sense of unity within the team—a factor the striker believes will drive them to further success this season.
“It just goes to show the unity that we have within the group and the love that the coach has for his players. We are really appreciative of the human being that he is and the work that we continue to do with him. May we win many more trophies this season with him,” Mabasa added.
As Pirates continue to build on their impressive run under Riveiro, the bond between the players and their coach remains a crucial foundation. Mabasa’s words reflect the respect and admiration the squad has for their leader, and with their sights set on more silverware, the Pirates are poised to keep their winning momentum going.
