Pirates Clarify Video Of Players Discussing Betting
Orlando Pirates Football Club has released a statement regarding a video circulating on social media that appears to show their players discussing a bet on a recent English Premier League match.
In the video, Chaine is heard saying “12 May, 5:30 pm, Old Trafford, straight win, R600,” before laughing and walking away.
These details correspond to the Manchester United vs Arsenal game on 12 May, which Manchester United lost 1-0.
The source of the leak remains unclear. However, Pirates released a statement distancing themselves from any betting activity by their players, emphasizing their awareness of league regulations. They clarified the video captured a lighthearted moment between teammates, not an actual bet.
“The club has noted a video circulating on social media involving two of our players discussing betting,” Pirates statement read.
“We would like to clarify that the players in the video did not place any bets. The video captured a light-hearted moment among teammates purporting to have placed a bet on an English Premiership match.
“As a club, we are fully aware of the regulations regarding betting. Betting on any sport is strictly prohibited for any professional player.
“However, we have addressed the matter with the players involved, emphasising that even in jest, such discussions can have serious implications.
“The club has reiterated the importance of adhering to betting regulations to avoid any potential long-term consequences.”
While Pirates maintain no bets were placed, they are investigating the matter further.
“The players recognise their error in judgment and have since apologised,” said the statement.
“However, due to the seriousness of this matter, the club has instituted its own internal investigation to ensure that no player is involved in any form of sports betting as this would constitute a breach in the club handbook that all players are signatory to.”
Unlike the ongoing tension in the Premier League title race, Orlando Pirates’ domestic season concluded without a championship challenge. Mamelodi Sundowns secured the league title comfortably, with six games remaining.
