Sundowns Maintain Perfect Record with Dominant Win Over Royal AM

Mamelodi Sundowns continued their relentless march towards an unbeaten season, brushing aside relegation-threatened Royal AM 2-0 at Harry Gwala Stadium on Tuesday.

Peter Shalulile displayed his predatory instincts once again, swiveling in the air to score the opening goal for Rulani Mokwena’s side in the first half.

Lesiba Nku, praised by coach Mokwena for his potential, rewarded his manager’s faith with a stunning strike inside the box in the second half, securing a comfortable victory for the African Giants.

Sundowns had a chance to extend their lead further when Siyabonga Mabena’s strike was handled inside the penalty area. However, Marcelo Allende’s subsequent penalty was blazed over.

With this victory, Sundowns climb to 69 points after 28 matches. They are now well on track to match and surpass their record of 71 points set in the 2015/16 season under coach Pitso Mosimane, needing only two wins from their remaining two games.

This was the second encounter between Royal AM and Sundowns in just four days, following their Saturday clash at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday where Shalulile’s header secured a narrow win for the Brazilians.

As expected, Sundowns controlled the game with their intricate passing, dismantling Royal AM’s defense. However, clear-cut opportunities were scarce in the opening stages.

Royal AM, desperate for points, attempted to exploit Sundowns on the counter-attack, with Hugo Nyame launching long balls towards Mfundo Thikazi.

Sundowns’ persistence paid off eventually. Nku’s header found its way to Shalulile, who converted expertly just before halftime.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Nku capitalized on space afforded to him inside the box, unleashing a powerful shot that beat Nyame at the far corner in the 74th minute.

This defeat further deepens Royal AM’s relegation worries. John Maduka’s side entered the game just two points ahead of 15th-placed Richards Bay (with a game in hand). Richards Bay’s surprise win over Orlando Pirates has boosted their survival hopes, leaving them just two points behind Royal AM with two games remaining.

Interestingly, the final two rounds of the season will be played simultaneously to ensure fairness. This sets the stage for a tense finale, with Richards Bay and Royal AM potentially both fighting to fight off playoffs on the last day as Cape Town Spurs has been relegated.
