Pirates Drop Crucial Points As Sundowns Close Gap In Diski Challenge Race
Orlando Pirates dropped crucial points on Saturday at UJ Soweto Stadium after suffering a 2–1 defeat to Golden Arrows in the DStv Diski Challenge, allowing Mamelodi Sundowns to move closer in the race for the title.
The Buccaneers came into the match sitting comfortably at the top of the log with a three-point lead over Sundowns as they continue their pursuit of a first-ever Diski Challenge title.
However, the defeat meant Pirates were unable to extend their advantage at the summit of the standings.
Despite the setback, Pirates remain the log leaders with 48 points after the match, although the gap at the top has now tightened significantly.
Sundowns, meanwhile, produced a dominant performance on Saturday as they secured an impressive and important 5–0 victory against AmaZulu at Tuks Stadium.
Following the convincing win, the Brazilians remain in second place on the table and are now level on points with Pirates, although the Buccaneers maintain their position at the top thanks to a superior goal difference.
Pirates still have an opportunity to open a three-point gap again, as they have played 21 matches so far, while Sundowns have already played 22 games.
In other matches played on Saturday, Chippa United suffered a disappointing 4–0 defeat at home to Sekhukhune United at Gelvandale Stadium. TS Galaxy recorded a 2–0 victory over Magesi at Isak Steyl Stadium, while Richards Bay and Stellenbosch played to a 1–1 draw at Princess Magogo Stadium.
The Premier Soccer League’s reserve league action will continue on Sunday with three more fixtures scheduled. The defending champions and struggling Kaizer Chiefs will face Durban City at Dobsonville Stadium.
The final two matches will see Polokwane City hosting Marumo Gallants at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, while Siwelele will be visited by Orbit College at UJ Soweto Stadium.
