Pirates Maintain Top Spot In Diski With Convincing Win

Orlando Pirates continued their impressive form with a 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants in the DStv Diski Challenge at Kanyamazane Stadium in Nelspruit on Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers are looking to claim their first Diski Challenge title since the competition’s inception in 2014, and their consistent point accumulation this season has put them in a strong position to achieve this goal.

Pirates made a strong start to the game, dominating the first 20 minutes and creating numerous scoring opportunities.

They struck early, with Thuto Sesipi netting the opening goal in the second minute after tapping in a perfectly weighted cross from Seth Green.

Gallants threatened to level the score in the 27th minute when Matthew Marou’s powerful right-footed shot from inside the box rattled the goalpost.

As the first half drew to a close, the Buccaneers had another chance to double their lead, but Joy Manana’s effort was comfortably saved by Gallants’ goalkeeper Gololosego Mohlala. The break arrived with the Buccaneers holding a 1-0 advantage.

The Buccaneers maintained their impressive form in the second half, doubling their lead through Manana’s seventh goal of the season, assisted by Tshepo Mahlambi.

The team continued to create scoring opportunities, coming close to scoring a third goal in the 73rd minute when the goalkeeper saved Samukelo Zikalala’s right-footed shot in a one-on-one situation.

Despite dominating the game and creating numerous chances, the Buccaneers failed to add another goal, and the match ended 2-0 in their favor.

With this victory, the Buccaneers remain atop the DStv Diski Challenge log with 37 points, seven points clear of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, who have 30 points.

In other matches, TS Galaxy secured a 2-1 win over Richards Bay at Kanyamazane Stadium. Meanwhile, Chippa United and Stellenbosch played out a goalless draw, as did Golden Arrows and Polokwane City. AmaZulu emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Magesi.

The South African reserve league will continue on Sunday with several exciting fixtures.

Kaizer Chiefs will face Mamelodi Sundowns, and Sekhukhune United will take on Orbit College, both matches to be played at Kanyamazane Stadium. The day’s final match will see Siwelele go up against Durban City.
