Pirates Trigger Makhaula’s Extension
Sportswire has been informed that Orlando Pirates have exercised their option to extend the contract of veteran midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula.
Makhaula’s previous contract with Pirates expired in June, but included an option for renewal. The Soweto giants wasted no time in triggering the extension, ensuring the former Free State Stars hardman remains with the club for the upcoming campaign, which kicks off this Saturday.
Makhaula joined Pirates from AmaZulu during the second half of the 2022/23 season, lifting the Nedbank Cup in his debut campaign under coach José Riveiro.
The following season (2023/24), he helped Pirates secure another domestic double, defending their MTN8 and Nedbank Cup titles.
During the 2024/25 campaign, Pirates added a third consecutive MTN8 trophy to their cabinet, though they narrowly missed out on defending the Nedbank Cup after losing to Kaizer Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Despite the setback, Makhaula’s individual brilliance was recognized at the end-of-season awards, where he was named the PSL Midfielder of the Season.
Having previously won the Nedbank Cup with Ea Lla Koto in 2017/18, the 36-year-old has now captured every domestic trophy available in the PSL. Last season, he formed an integral part of the Pirates squad that claimed a memorable treble, including the Betway Premiership title—their first league triumph in 14 years.
Although Makhaula featured in 18 matches across all competitions last term, his campaign was heavily disrupted by injuries.
He missed the start of the season and subsequently spent most of the second half on the sidelines. Overall, the midfield anchor has made 92 appearances for the Buccaneers, scoring two goals.
By retaining his services, Pirates will rely heavily on Makhaula’s vast experience as they aim for a deeper run in the CAF Champions League while defending their three domestic titles.
Pirates begin their league defense on Saturday afternoon when they host newly-promoted Milford FC at the Orlando Amstel Arena.
