“Real Bullshit!” – Furious Broos Hits Back

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has dismissed claims that abandoning his five-man defence was the key factor behind South Africa’s improved performance against Czechia, insisting that critics misunderstood the reasons for the team’s defeat to Mexico.

Following the 2-0 loss to Mexico in their opening FIFA World Cup match, several critics questioned Broos’ decision to deploy a five-man defence, arguing that the system prevented Bafana from playing their natural game.

Against Czechia on Thursday, however, the Belgian tactician switched to a back four, supported by three central midfielders.

The result was a vastly improved performance, with South Africa earning a valuable 1-1 draw and securing their first point of the tournament.

Despite the improvement, Broos rejected suggestions that the change in formation was responsible for Bafana’s better display.

“You know, all the discussions about a back four and a back five. I had to laugh when people said, ‘Yeah, he played with five at the back and that’s why he lost,’” he told Sporty TV.

“That’s bullshit, real bullshit… People don’t understand it. The only thing is that we didn’t execute it well.

“The defensive tactics were good, apart from a few moments against Mexico. But when we had the ball, it was a disaster, and that had nothing to do with playing five or four at the back.”

The Belgian coach also expressed frustration with the officiating after South Africa received two yellow cards during the clash against Czechia.

Bafana were shown two yellow cards and two red cards in their opening match against Mexico, and Broos felt there was inconsistency in the application of disciplinary decisions.

“If you give yellow cards for what we did, then you also have to give yellow cards for similar incidents by the other team. And that was not the case. That’s what frustrated me,” added Broos.

Attention will now turn to Bafana’s decisive final Group A clash against South Korea in Monterrey on Thursday.

With their World Cup fate hanging in the balance, South Africa know that victory could keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive, while anything less could see them packing their bags and heading home.
