Reputable Sports Brand Joma Sports Partners With Padel Ace

Renowned sports brand Joma Sports has joined forces with Chiltern Park Padel Ace, a padel tennis club located in Westville, Durban.

Padel tennis is a racket sport originating in Mexico, typically played in doubles on an enclosed court slightly smaller than a doubles tennis court. While padel shares the same scoring system as tennis, the rules, strokes, and techniques differ.

The balls used are similar to tennis balls but with slightly less pressure. The key distinctions lie in the court having walls that players can utilize to return shots, similar to squash, and the use of solid, stringless paddles. Notably, the serve height must be at or below the server’s waist.

According to the International Padel Federation (FIP), as of 2023, there are over 25 million active players in more than 90 countries. Padel is a rapidly growing sport with an estimated annual value of €2 billion.

Although padel is gaining traction in South Africa, it currently lacks official affiliation. However, Chiltern Park Padel Ace coach Yasser Assamo expresses hope for recognition by the next Olympic Games in 2028.

“Having Joma Sports on board is incredible,” says Assamo. “We’ve known Joma for years and have immense respect for their brand quality and rich history. Partnering with such a prestigious brand elevates our level as padel players and aligns with our future aspirations.”

Joma Sports boasts a growing reputation, having previously served as a kit supplier for South African football clubs AmaZulu and Chippa United. Notably, they were the kit sponsor for Free State Stars during their historic 2017/18 Nedbank Cup victory against Maritzburg United, the club’s first trophy since 1992. Currently, Joma Sports sponsors Richards Bay in the DStv Premiership.

“We are one of the best teams in Natal right now,” Assamo continues, “and arguably one of the best in South Africa. We recently participated in the Durban Masters, a tournament for the country’s top players, where we reached the semifinals. We’re looking forward to taking it to the next level and securing the trophy at the upcoming Joburg tournament on July 27th.”

Yasser Ebrahim, another coach at Chiltern Park Padel Ace and a newly appointed Joma ambassador, shares Assamo’s enthusiasm for the partnership and the sport’s growth.

“I’m most excited about the sport’s potential,” says Ebrahim. “It’s relatively new in South Africa, particularly Durban. We aim to raise awareness and increase participation in the sport, alongside promoting the Joma brand. With upcoming tournaments and growing investment, I believe padel has a bright future. Additionally, it fosters a wonderful family-friendly atmosphere, making it accessible to players of all skill levels.”

Joma Sports will provide apparel for all teams participating in the highly anticipated Kasi tournament in Durban, the Khabba Cup, which will be held at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.
