Mokwena Explains “Bullet” Note To Mudau During Nedbank Cup Final
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has shed light on the now-viral note he passed to defender Khuliso Mudau during the Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates.
The match, held at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, saw Sundowns fall short.
A photo captured by a photographer Pitso Matlou, known as Vino Snap, sent social media into a frenzy. It depicted a handwritten message from Mokwena to Mudau that read: “I told you I would take a bullet for you; I’m asking you not to give up on me.”
Addressing the situation, Mokwena revealed on SuperSport TV, “The day before the game, Khuliso Mudau was experiencing a very emotional challenge. As I would with any of my players, I reassured him of my unwavering support.”
While refraining from disclosing specific details of Mudau’s personal struggle, the former Pirates coach elaborated on his message to the Bafana Bafana defender: “I told him the day before the match that I would fight for him, and that I would take a bullet for him. Those were my exact words.”
This incident highlights the strong bond Mokwena shares with his players. “I genuinely believe I would take a bullet for most of them,” he declared, “because they fight for me on the field.”
Mokwena went on to explain the rationale behind the handwritten note: “These kinds of conversations happen frequently between players and coaches behind the scenes. Due to the stadium’s noise and Mudau’s position as right back, it was impossible to convey the message directly from the bench.”
The viral photo sparked some criticism aimed at Vino Snap for his decision to publish it. However, Mokwena clarified that he harbors no ill will towards the photographer.
