Ribeiro Costa Nominated For FIFA Puskás Award
Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s stunning goal against Borussia Dortmund has been nominated for the FIFA Puskás Award 2025.
Costa, who forced his way out of Sundowns during the off-season after accusing the club of blocking transfer offers, produced a moment of brilliance in the FIFA Club World Cup group stages. Picking up the ball near the centre circle, he weaved past several Dortmund defenders before unleashing a powerful left-footed strike that beat goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
Although Sundowns failed to advance to the knockout stages, Costa’s goal was later named the Goal of the Tournament.
The 27-year-old, who previously swept the PSL Golden Boot, Footballer of the Season, and Players’ Player of the Season awards, now plays for Spanish Segunda División side Cultural Leonesa.
Costa is one of 11 players shortlisted for the prestigious award and faces stiff competition from stars such as Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, whose thunderous strike against Real Madrid in last season’s UEFA Champions League also earned a nomination.
The winner will be determined through a combination of fan and expert votes, deciding who takes home the men’s Puskás honour.
Voting opened today via FIFA’s dedicated platform and will close on 3 December 2025.
