Riveiro: My Departure Has Not Negatively Impacted The Team

Outgoing Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has acknowledged the club’s decision to publicly announce his departure before the end of the season, stating it was the right move as his contract will not be renewed upon its expiry at the conclusion of the campaign.
Riveiro, who joined Pirates on 25 June 2022, will leave the club after three successful years.
Pirates’ announcement early last month effectively ended the widespread speculation surrounding the Spanish coach’s future, despite his impressive record of securing five major trophies with the club.
“I think it is a good way to avoid speculation and maintain control within our environment,” said Riveiro, whose team is set to face Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby on Saturday at 15:00.
“At the same time, it demonstrated transparency from our club, and I believe it was well-executed. Why not, as you mentioned?”
He further commented, “I wasn’t aware this was the first time Pirates [announced a coach’s departure in advance], but it probably won’t be the last. I think it’s a good way to clarify the club’s situation and the coach’s situation, in this case, allowing us – coaches, the football club, and the team together – to focus on the final part of the season.”
“I’m happy and pleased with how the club handled this situation,” Riveiro added.
Since Pirates announced Riveiro’s departure on 3 April, the team’s results have been inconsistent. In the subsequent six matches, Pirates have only secured two wins, drawn two, and suffered two defeats.
Notably, both losses occurred in their most recent matches: against Pyramids, which led to their exit from the CAF Champions League semi-final second leg last Friday, and a midweek loss to Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership.
The defeat to Sekhukhune has significantly hampered Pirates’ chances of catching Mamelodi Sundowns in the league title race. Miguel Cardoso’s Sundowns defeated Richards Bay, moving to 58 points after 23 matches, a 12-point lead over Pirates, who have two games in hand.
However, Pirates still have an opportunity to conclude the season on a high note by aiming for a third consecutive Nedbank Cup triumph when they face Chiefs at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 May.
“I have had the privilege of working with exceptional human beings,” Riveiro reflected. “Especially the group this season. They know this because I consistently tell them how much happiness they bring me as a coach and as a person.”
“We have a bond that will last forever. I hope to return one day, perhaps as a tourist, or who knows, back at Pirates one [in some capacity],” he said. “So, I am grateful for the opportunity to work in a league like this and to be part of the history and lives of these guys at the club.”
