Riveiro On His Milestone Win: We Were Never In Trouble

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro felt his side was never under threat as they secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Richards Bay at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone for a coach, who celebrated his 100th game in charge of the Soweto giants.

The game was never spectacular until the goal scored by Evidence Makgopa in the first half when he pounced after Bay goalkeeper Ian Otieno made a flounder by dropping a catchable save and the Bafana Bafana international finished off from close range.

The Soweto Giants extended their great start this season by 21 points after seven matches, six points ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, who can cut the lead to three when they host Polokwane City at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday.

“I think it was very complete performance tonight and probably 1-0 is a short scoreline in my opinion,” said Riveiro on SuperSport TV after the game.

“We managed to create good and clear chances to go to the last stages of the game. But anyway, the game was totally under control from our side, from the beginning. Of course, it took us 15 to 20 minutes as usual to start to find the spaces against the back five, low block. But due to the pace and the quality, we managed to do it.”

Despite the victory, Riveiro remains focused on improving his team’s performance. He acknowledged that there is always room for improvement, whether it’s in their build-up play, set pieces, or pressing tactics.

“Everything,” he said when asked what he needed to work on.

“There is a room for improvement in everything we do, in our build up phase, in the set pieces, in our pressing, there is always room to improve.

“That is the beauty of this game and it is really complex, it is really difficult to understand sometimes and that is why there is always a space for improvement, individually and collective as well.

“I know the space for the improvement for me as a coach.”

With a demanding schedule ahead, Pirates will need to maintain their consistency to stay at the top of the league table. While they have been impressive so far, Riveiro knows that their rivals, Sundowns, will be eager to close the gap.
