SAFA Considers Ntseki For Technical Director Role

The South African Football Association (SAFA) is considering re-appointing Molefi Ntseki, this time for the technical director role, according to Sportswire.

SAFA is currently seeking a new technical director following Walter Steenbok’s departure. Steenbok’s tenure was reportedly marked by internal conflict and a toxic work environment, leading to his resignation.

Steenbok’s departure, previously reported by this publication, has prompted SAFA to consider Ntseki for the technical director position.

Ntseki, who was also considered for the SA Under-23 coaching role after David Notoane’s resignation last year, was recently dismissed from the same position as technical director of Marumo Gallants.

Currently, Ntseki is leading the Bafana Bafana makeshift squad in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers. His team achieved a notable victory, winning 3-1 in the second leg on Sunday and 4-2 aggregate over Egypt.

The Bafana Bafana B team is now set to face Malawi in the final qualifying round. The winner will secure a place in the tournament for locally based players, scheduled for August. It remains unclear whether Ntseki will continue to lead the team in the last qualifier against Malawi.

Ntseki previously led the SA U17 team to the FIFA World Cup in Chile in 2015, where they finished bottom of their group, losing two of their three matches.

In August 2019, as SAFA struggled to get the coach, Ntseki was appointed Bafana Bafana head coach, succeeding Stuart Baxter, who resigned after the team’s quarter-final exit to Nigeria at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt. Ntseki had served as Baxter’s assistant during that tournament.

However, Ntseki failed to guide Bafana Bafana to qualification for the 2022 AFCON in Cameroon, losing the decisive match 2-0 to Sudan in March 2021. He was replaced by current head coach Hugo Broos two months later.

Following his departure from SAFA, Ntseki was appointed head of technical and youth development at Kaizer Chiefs.

After Chiefs finished fifth in the 2022/23 season under coach Arthur Zwane, Ntseki was appointed head coach in June 2023. However, his tenure was short-lived. In October in the same year, Chiefs pulled the trigger, releasing a statement stating that Ntseki’s contract was “ended amicably by mutual consent given the club’s run of disappointing results, the parties agreed that this was the best course of action under the prevailing circumstances.”
