Screamer Tshabalala Has Sadly Passed Away

Orlando Pirates Football Club has confirmed the passing of legendary player and coach Stanley “Screamer” Tshabalala.

A few weeks ago, Pirates announced that Tshabalala was hospitalized after being injured during a home invasion. Sadly, he has succumbed to those injuries.

Tshabalala’s association with Orlando Pirates spanned decades, both as a player and most recently as the club’s technical director.

“The Tshabalala and Orlando Pirates families are deeply saddened to announce the untimely passing of Stanley Tshabalala this afternoon in hospital,” the club stated.

“Affectionately known as ‘Bra Stan,’ he passed away from injuries sustained in a shooting incident in March of this year. The Tshabalala and Orlando Pirates families will provide further details regarding funeral arrangements in due course. Please respect the families’ privacy while they grieve.”

Tshabalala’s passing comes just two years after the loss of his son, Magesh, a member of the Kwaito group TKZee, who passed away in August 2022.

Beyond his club career, Tshabalala played a significant role in South African football history. He served as the first Bafana Bafana coach upon the country’s readmission to FIFA in 1992. Notably, he was at the helm when Bafana Bafana secured a 1-0 victory over Cameroon through a Doctor Khumalo penalty at Durban’s Kings Park Stadium.

Khumalo later recounted a humorous anecdote about the match, mentioning that Tshabalala ducked under the dugout during the penalty and wasn’t present for the celebration due to the pressure of the moment.

Tshabalala also led Pirates to MTN8 victory in 1978, two with Mamelodi Sundowns in 1988 and 1990.
