Sebelebele Admits Fear Before Memorable Derby Debut
Orlando Pirates defender Kamogelo Sebelebele revealed he was initially scared before kickoff, but reminded himself he represents Orlando Pirates and had to switch on for his first Soweto Derby.
The 23-year-old defender enjoyed a dream introduction to South African football’s biggest fixture, starting and finishing the match at FNB Stadium as the Buccaneers secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs.
Sebelebele delivered a complete performance, excelling defensively while also contributing offensively, and was rewarded with the Man of the Match award.
Speaking after the game, the former TS Galaxy speedy right back opened up about the emotions he experienced on such a grand stage.
“Yes, I was scared before entering the game, but when I went onto the field I said, ‘This is a men’s game,’” Sebelebele said.
“I’m playing for Orlando Pirates, so I had to switch on, and this is an important game for Pirates. I’m glad for this game because it was my first derby.”
Pirates’ goals were scored by Tshepang Moremi, Oswin Appolis, and Evidence Makgopa, with Moremi and Appolis also making their Soweto Derby debuts alongside Sebelebele, highlighting a new generation stepping up in the famous black and white jersey.
The Buccaneers came into the encounter under pressure after suffering back-to-back defeats to Mamelodi Sundowns in the league and being knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit Casric Stars.
The Bafana Bafana right back also emphasised how crucial it was for the Buccaneers to respond.
“This game of today (Saturday) was very important because we were coming from two defeats and we had to keep our heads up,” he added.
“This is a big game in South Africa, and we had to make our supporters happy.”
The victory saw Pirates return to the summit of the Betway Premiership standings with 41 points, three ahead of Sundowns, who sit second on 38 points, and will be facing Sekhukhune United at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Pirates will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Peter Mokaba Stadium to face Polokwane City as they continue their push for the league title. Sebelebele will be aiming to build on his outstanding derby performance and cement his place as one of the club’s most influential new signings.
