Seoposenwe Reflects On Legacy And Gratitude

Star striker Jermaine Seoposenwe has reflected on the profound impact that football has had on her life after calling it quits with Banyana Banyana.

Seoposenwe announced her retirement from the national team last month, and last Friday evening, she played her last game as Banyana Banyana lost to Ghana in the third-place playoff match in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco on penalties.

For Seoposenwe, football has been more than just a game; it has been a platform for growth, learning, and self-discovery.

“I think for me, football has been everything; it has given me everything that I have today,” she said.

“The passion and the love I have for the game is why we do it.”

Seoposenwe expressed her gratitude to Banyana Banyana, saying that the national team has provided her with opportunities to showcase her abilities and travel the world.

“I think over the years Banyana has given me a platform to show my abilities, and it’s taken me to a lot of places in the world that I would never have thought that would be in,” she said.

“So, it’s been a great learning core for me in my life and teaches me many things not only in football but also outside football.”

As she hangs up her Banyana Banyana jersey, Seoposenwe hopes that her legacy will be defined by her football career and achievements.

“I feel like players, coaches, and people around me who will remember me will influence that,” said the CF Monterrey striker in Mexico.

“I think my football career and what I’ve achieved should be the only thing that people look at and that should be how they remember me.”

Seoposenwe has had a storied career with Banyana Banyana, playing over 100 games and scoring more than 20 goals for the national team.

She was part of the squad that won the WAFCON 2022 in Morocco and also participated in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where she helped coach Desiree Ellis’ side reach the knockout stage. They made history, becoming the first senior national team in Mzansi to reach the knockout stages.

“I just want to thank everyone who has had an opportunity to make me the player I am today because it changed my life for the better, and I’m so grateful for everything that has brought me,” she said.
