Cupido Credits Hard Work For The FIFA Club World Cup Breakthrough

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Keanu Cupido has spoken about his remarkable journey to playing all games in the FIFA Club World Cup, despite struggling to get game time in the Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League last season.
The 27-year-old joined the Brazilians in the January transfer window and initially found it tough to break into the starting lineup, playing only two league games.
Speaking at the launch of the 18th edition of the MTN8 on Wednesday, Cupido revealed that his journey to success had not been easy.
“It’s not about straight in, for me it’s been work of which it’s hard work that paid off,” he said.
“Yes, it did surprise me (to break through the lineup in Club World Cup) because I haven’t played for a while, and going to a major tournament like that, I told myself it’s a good day for me. At the end of the day, you know God works in mysterious ways.”
Cupido praised his teammates at Sundowns for their support, which he believes helped boost his confidence.
“The players at Mamelodi Sundowns make it very easy for everyone, with the support they have, and so if you get game time, the players will encourage you,” he said.
“With that support, I think your confidence will grow, and that’s what they did to me. They told me to take it easy and not force or rush things.”
The defender also credited his wife for keeping him motivated during tough times.
“Before it was tough for me, but my wife made it very easy because she told me that everything works through God, and if it’s his timing, it will work out,” he said.
“I think that’s what kept me going basically. I feel like she played a major part in keeping me motivated and continuing to work.”
Cupido’s performance in the FIFA Club World Cup has given him a confidence boost heading into the new season.
“So, going into this season, I think this tournament helped me a lot because I showed many people who I am,” the former Cape Town City defender said.
“Now I feel like I have more confidence going into this season.”
Cupido and his Sundowns will kick off their 2025/26 season with the MTN8 quarter final against Richards Bay at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
Last season, the Brazilians lost in the semifinal against Stellenbosch.
