Sharks Confirm Springbok Scrum-half Departure

The Hollywoodbets Sharks have confirmed the departure of Springbok scrum-half Grant Williams via social media.

The 29-year-old, widely regarded as the Springboks’ primary spark-plug at nine, will head to Japan for the next chapter of his career.

With his contract set to expire in June 2026, the announcement confirms months of speculation about a potential move, linking the 29-year-old with an exit from the Sharks.

A trip to Japan in February, reported by Rapport at the time, fuelled speculation that Williams was acquainting himself with his potential new surroundings, though it remained unclear whether the visit was for business or leisure. That uncertainty has now been put to rest.

His departure leaves the Durban-based side with just two recognised scrum-halves – Jaden Hendrikse and Ross Braude – as the Sharks weigh up options to bolster their depth in the position.

Williams has been a key figure for the Sharks since 2018, having come through the ranks at Paarl Gymnasium before developing into a regular member of the Springbok squad.

At one stage, Williams had been linked with a move to the Vodacom Bulls this season.

While his departure follows that of Lukhanyo Am to Japan, who joined the Mitsubishi Sagamihara Dynaboars last November, and with Siya Kolisi returning to Cape Town to rejoin the Stormers, the Sharks can take some comfort in the anticipated return of star prop Thomas du Toit from English club Bath.

Williams will be the latest in a long list of Springboks plying their trade in Japan, with Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus previously stating that established players based in the Far East would still be considered for selection.

Although his new club has not yet been confirmed, his departure is now a certainty.
