“Shut Up!” — Furious Broos Blasts Social Media ‘Trash’

A characteristically defiant Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has told social media critics to “shut up,” fiercely defending his record following South Africa’s disappointing 2-0 loss to Mexico in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener.
Broos has come under intense fire for fielding an experimental, ultra-defensive 5-3-2 formation that saw El Tri completely overrun Bafana Bafana at Estadio Azteca on Thursday last week.
The tactical shift isolated star forwards Lyle Foster and Iqraam Rayners, leaving them entirely starved of service up front.
To make matters worse, disciplinary meltdowns saw both Sphephelo Sithole and captain Themba Zwane sent off.
Zwane has since been hit with a severe three-match ban by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, ruling him out of the remainder of the group stage.
With Bafana Bafana currently anchoring Group A, Thursday’s upcoming clash against the Czech Republic at the Atlanta Stadium has become an absolute must-win. Yet, Broos insists he will not let the digital noise dictate his next move.
“I have been coaching for 40 years, and I know that criticism comes with the job,” said Broos.
“At the moment, I am being criticised. People have to know, for those who still don’t know, that I do things my way.
“I have never listened to the trash on social media. I never listen to people who sometimes think they are important and feel they have to criticise the team.
“So, when I look at what some of them have achieved before, I think it would be better if they kept quiet.”
While South Africa’s flat performance drew global criticism, Broos maintained that the structural issues have already been addressed internally ahead of the showdown with the Czech Republic—who are making their first World Cup appearance since Germany 2006 after a tight opening loss to South Korea.
“I know what went wrong,” Broos said.
“We had a debriefing two days after the game against Mexico. The players know what went wrong as well, and that is the most important thing.
“For the rest, I will continue to do things my way. If people want me to pick one player or another and I don’t agree, they will not be in the team.”
