Fadlu’s Simba Remain Top As Yanga Halted

Fadlu Davids’ Simba SC remains on top of the NBC Tanzanian Premier League standings after their archrivals and title contenders Young Africans suffered their second defeat of the season on Thursday evening.

Miguel Gamondi’s side succumbed to a 3-1 home defeat to Tabora United, making it back-to-back losses in the league for the defending champions as they were edged 1-0 by last season’s runners-up Azam FC on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the South African mentor led his charges to a comfortable 4-0 victory against Kinondoni MC on Wednesday to make it four wins on the trot since falling short to Young Africans in the Kariakoo derby in October.

Simba claimed the four wins in style, scoring nine goals and keeping clean sheets in all those encounters, sending a strong message about their intentions to bring back the league title to the red side of Dar es Salaam.

Overall, the 22-time Tanzanian top-flight winners have won eight out of their ten matches in the league, scoring 21 goals and conceding just three, proving their prowess on both ends of the pitch with a lethal attack combined with a stubborn defense.

Davids’ troops are one point clear at the summit with 25 points, while Gamondi’s Yanga is a point shy in second place, with Singida Black Stars accumulating 23 points in third place as Azam FC rounds up the top four with 21 points.

The former Orlando Pirates co-coach will be keen to topple Yanga, who have won three consecutive league titles since 2022, as Simba were last crowned champions of Tanzania in 2021, which saw their run of winning four in a row end abruptly.

Simba will continue their quest to overcome the drought with a visit to newly promoted 15th-placed Pamba SC after the international break, while Young Africans will aim to bounce back to winning ways and defend their crown when they tackle fifth-placed Fountain Gate FC at home.
