South Africa Fall To India To Lose The Series

The South African tour of India reached a thrilling and climactic conclusion on Friday, as India defeated South Africa to secure victory in the T20 International series.

While the Proteas fell short in the shortest format, the tour can still be regarded as a successful one, as they claimed the Test series emphatically and pushed the ODI series to a decider.

Played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the final T20I delivered an entertaining spectacle, especially after the fourth match of the series was abandoned due to fog.

South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl first, making two changes to their lineup with George Linde replacing Anrich Nortje and David Miller coming in for Tristan Stubbs.

India’s innings got off to a strong start despite the continued struggles for captain Suryakumar Yadav, who was dismissed for just five. However, the rest of the batting unit stepped up and contributed.

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma laid a solid foundation, putting on 63 runs for the opening wicket before Sharma became the first of Corbin Bosch’s two victims.

The momentum truly shifted through a devastating partnership between Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya. The pair added 105 runs, with Varma scoring a composed 73 off 42 deliveries and Pandya blasting a rapid 63 from just 25 balls.

Their intent was evident immediately after Yadav’s dismissal, as they plundered 44 runs from the next 11 balls.

Pandya’s ultra-aggressive approach saw him smash five sixes, equalling the tally of the rest of the batting lineup combined. His 16-ball half-century was the second-fastest by an Indian batter in T20 internationals.

Shivam Dube added late impetus, scoring 10 runs off three balls to propel India to a formidable total of 231 for five.

In response, Quinton de Kock continued his excellent form, giving South Africa a blistering start. He found solid support from Dewald Brevis, but once both batters were dismissed, the chase unravelled quickly.

De Kock was caught and bowled by Jasprit Bumrah for 65 off 35 balls, while Brevis followed shortly after for a well-made 31 off 17, leaving South Africa at 122.

Although Marco Jansen and George Linde provided brief resistance with a combined 30 runs off just 13 deliveries, the innings lacked sustained momentum. Varun Chakravarthy proved to be the chief architect of South Africa’s collapse, slicing through the middle and lower order as wickets fell rapidly.

South Africa’s innings began with promise but ended tamely. Nevertheless, the Proteas can reflect on the tour with pride, particularly after their memorable Test series triumph, even as India celebrated a well-earned T20I series victory.
