Barker Leaves Stellenbosch FC In Shock Move

In one of the most surprising moves in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), Steve Barker has ended his long association with Stellenbosch FC to take up a new role with Tanzanian giants Simba SC.
Simba SC officially announced Barker’s appointment on Friday, a move that caught many in South African football by surprise.
CAF Confederation Cup Links Behind Barker’s Appointment
Simba were well aware of Barker’s coaching credentials, having faced Stellenbosch FC in the CAF Confederation Cup last season. The Tanzanian side eliminated Stellies in the semi-finals, with Simba then coached by fellow South African Fadlu Davids.
Simba went on to reach the final of the competition but ultimately lost to RS Berkane of Morocco.
Barker’s Legacy at Stellenbosch FC
Barker departs Stellenbosch as the longest-serving coach in the PSL, having been in charge since 2017. He guided the club to promotion to the PSL in the 2018/19 season, laying the foundation for their rise in South African top-flight football.
Under Barker’s leadership, Stellenbosch FC established themselves as a competitive force, winning the Carling Knockout Cup in the 2023/24 season.
In addition, Barker led Stellies to back-to-back MTN8 finals in successive seasons, although they finished runners-up on both occasions after defeats to Orlando Pirates.
Consistent Continental Qualification
Stellenbosch FC also finished third in the PSL in two consecutive seasons, earning qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup, and reached the group stages of the competition this season under Barker’s guidance.
Uncertain Future for Stellenbosch FC
With Barker’s departure confirmed, attention now turns to who will replace him at Stellenbosch. The club currently finds themselves in a difficult position in the PSL standings, sitting 14th on the log with 12 points from 14 matches.
The new coach will face the immediate challenge of steering the Cape Winelands side away from the relegation zone and restoring their competitiveness in domestic and continental competitions.
