Stellenbosch Humbled By Berkane In The Last CAF Group

Stellenbosch was given harsh lessons as they were thumped 5-0 by RS Berkane of Morocco in the last match of the CAF Confederation Cup at Stade Municipal de Berkane on Sunday.
However, Stellies came to this game having guaranteed to finish second in Group B and through to the quarterfinal despite a huge loss to Berkane. They booked the spot after winning their previous match against Stade Malien last weekend in Pretoria.
Impressively, Stellies are in the last eight without playing matches in their backyard.
The first two goals for the home side in Morocco came in during the first half through Oussama Lamlioui and Youssef Mehri, while in the second half, they scored three goals through Paul Bassene (two) and the other from Youssef Zghoudi.
It was the second time the Stellies lost to RS Berkane, as they lost 3-1 last year in the first round at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
The Western Cape-based side is participating for the first time in the Confederation Cup, and fortunately, they made it to the quarterfinal. RS Berkane, on the other side, are through to the quarterfinal as they finished as the log leaders with 16 points.
Steve Barker’s side have nine points after six games. The 2023/24 champions of the Carling Knockout won three and lost three games in the group stage. Stellies will face whether Simba, Zamalek, or USM Alger in the quarterfinal of this competition. All these three teams finished as the log leaders in their groups.
