Stellenbosch Sign Defender From Chiefs

Stellenbosch has confirmed the signing of defender Given Msimango from Kaizer Chiefs.

Msimango joins Stellies as part of a swap deal that sees Ashley du Preez move to the Cape Winelands club, while Langelihle Phili heads in the opposite direction to Naturena.

Du Preez’s arrival was announced by Stellenbosch earlier on Tuesday after he travelled with the squad to Durban, where Gavin Hunt’s men opened their Betway Premiership campaign with a 1-0 defeat to AmaZulu.

Msimango, who was hampered by injuries during his time at Naturena but finished last season strongly, was not included in the Amakhosi squad that defeated Kruger United 3-1 at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday.

“It feels great to be part of Stellenbosch FC,” Msimango said.

“This is a great environment with good management, a fantastic coaching staff and a team that wants to compete, which are all the ingredients needed for success.

“Stellenbosch are an ambitious team that wants to compete and win trophies. The club recently competed in the CAF Confederation Cup, and I want to help the team compete at the highest level and reach those heights again.

“I want to be consistent with my performances and help the team as much as I can. I’m here to work hard for the club, and I’ve already received messages of support from our fans, so I hope to make them happy this season.”

The 29-year-old centre-back arrives in the Cape Winelands with a wealth of experience, having made more than 150 appearances across spells with Highlands Park, TS Galaxy and Kaizer Chiefs during his professional career.

Msimango will wear the No. 30 jersey this season and could make his debut when Stellenbosch host Polokwane City in the Betway Premiership on 11 August.
