Sundowns Close Gap On Pirates After Stellenbosch Win

Mamelodi Sundowns cut Orlando Pirates’ lead to three points in the DStv Diski Challenge after a 1-0 win over Stellenbosch on Saturday. Thato Sibiya’s late goal at Tuks Stadium revived the Brazilians’ title hopes with five games remaining.

The Brazilians returned to action after a two-week break, having missed matches over the previous two weekends, which allowed Orlando Pirates to open a six-point lead at the top of the table.

Despite that gap, Sundowns have now reduced the deficit to just three points. They sit on 57 points, while Pirates lead the standings with 60, with both sides having played 25 matches each.

The Buccaneers have an opportunity to extend their advantage back to six points when they face Richards Bay on Sunday at Chatsworth Stadium.

Thato Sibiya, who has also featured for Sundowns’ first team, scored the late winner to secure victory against the two-time DStv Diski Challenge champions.

Defending champions Kaizer Chiefs dropped important points after being held to a 1-1 draw by Siwelele at Dobsonville Stadium, despite coming into the match in strong form.

Chiefs remain fifth on the table with 43 points from 26 games, while Siwelele hold third place with 49 points.

In other Saturday results, Marumo Gallants and TS Galaxy played to a 1-1 draw at CUT Stadium, while Magesi and Orbit College shared the spoils in a goalless draw at Seshego Stadium.

The final match of the day is currently underway, having kicked off at 12:00 at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium, where Golden Arrows are facing Durban City in a Durban derby.

Sunday’s fixtures will see Chippa United take on Polokwane City at Gelvandale Stadium, while Sekhukhune United face AmaZulu at Chatsworth Stadium.
