Sundowns Coach Defends One-Year Deal For Zwane
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has defended the club’s decision to offer captain Themba Zwane a one-year contract extension.
Speaking after Sundowns’ MTN8 victory over Polokwane City on Sunday, Mngqithi emphasized that the move is intended to keep the veteran midfielder on his toes.
“I think it is right thing to do,” said Mngqithi.
“Everyone is free to make his opinion heard, but I think it is right thing do to.
“Because, for players of that age, it is important to keep them on their toes. I don’t think it is necessarily means he would be out of the club after one-year, but for him to stay sharp, it’s important that he knows he has to fight for the next contract.
“I think if all PSL clubs can adopt that, it would be the best thing we can do for our football. Because these senior players, they want to get a four-year contract because they know they are looking for a retirement package and you want them to perform every match.
Zwane, a key figure for Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, has been a consistent performer in recent seasons. Despite turning 35, he remains a vital asset to the club.
Mngqithi expressed confidence in Zwane’s ability to continue delivering top-level performances. “I think it’s a good thing and I think Mshishi is the right player for that because he is a very professional boy – he will work very hard, he will know he cannot sit on his laurels, he has to give his best shot and I’m very confident that he will do very well,” the coach added.
Zwane, who has won eight league titles with Sundowns and many other local and international trophies, has featured in 435 matches for Sundowns since 2010/11 season, scoring 84 goals along with 61 assists.
