Sundowns Midfielder Coetzee Confident Amidst Coaching Change

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Rivaldo Coetzee has assured fans that the team remains focused and undisturbed despite the sudden departure of Rulani Mokwena.

As the Brazilians gear up for their MTN 8 quarterfinal clash against Polokwane City at Lucas Moripe Stadium (15:00), Coetzee emphasized the club’s readiness to adapt and continue their winning mentality under the guidance of assistant coach Manqoba Mngqithi

The unexpected exit of Mokwena, a pivotal figure in Sundowns’ recent successes, raised concerns about potential disruptions within the squad. However, Coetzee, speaking ahead of the crucial encounter, dispelled any notions of unrest, highlighting the sense of continuity provided by Mngqithi’s presence.

“I don’t think we’ve been disturbed as much because Manqoba has been with the club and with most of the group that has been here for a few years. Some continuity’s happening, we are looking forward to it,” said the composed defender.

Reflecting on the ever-changing nature of football, Coetzee expressed a pragmatic approach to the coaching transition, stressing the importance of adaptability.

“This is football. One day you are here, one day you are not. Unfortunately, it’s the head coach who [is] not here. Next season it could be me or another player. It’s just to adapt to Manqoba’s philosophy and what he expects of us,” he added.

Coetzee, who saw his option exercised by Sundowns after managing only 15 appearances in last season’s league success, is determined to solidify his place at the heart of Sundowns’ defense.

The 27-year-old emphasized the significance of staying focused on his development while absorbing guidance from the coaching staff.

“It’s just to focus on my own game, listen to all the pointers of the coaches that we have, and make sure when I get the chance to be on the pitch to help the team. Coach Steve Komphela has been working a lot with the defenders especially,” he said.

With the MTN 8 trophy being one of the few that has eluded Sundowns in recent years, Coetzee is adamant that the team is prepared to give their all in pursuit of silverware this season. The quarterfinal clash against Polokwane City presents an opportunity for the Brazilians to set the tone for a successful campaign.

“At Sundowns, we want to win all the trophies. We know it’s not possible, but we always go into every match with the same mentality. With the MTN8 it’s the first game of the season and it gets to be a quarterfinal, so all the teams that are competing in the MTN8 will want to go all out because you play three games, and you are in the final. It will be a good start of the season for us to give us confidence going into what will be a very long season,” Coetzee concluded.

As Sundowns take the field on Saturday, all eyes will be on how they respond to the recent changes and whether they can begin their season with a victory that can potentially set them on course for MTN8 glory.
