Sundowns’ Season Opener Ends In A Draw Against Chippa

Chippa United put up a gallant fight to hold Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw in the opening game of the Betway Premiership 2025/26 season at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

While Chippa came back to snatch a draw, they are still waiting for their first win in the league against their illustrious opponent. But Chippa showed that they will be difficult side to break down this season.

Both teams started the game on a high note, creating scoring opportunities in the first 15 minutes, but neither team managed to find the back of the net.

The Brazilians broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute, with Arthur Sales scoring a well-taken goal assisted by Tashreeq Matthews.

The Chili Boys had a chance to equalize six minutes later, but as the game progressed, Chippa failed to capitalize on their chances, including a missed opportunity by Asanele Bonani after a great cross from Xolani Sithole.

In the second half, coach Miguel Cardoso made some tactical changes, introducing Zuko Mdunyelwa and later Themba Zwane and Keanu Cupido to strengthen his defense and midfield.

Five minutes after the substitutions, Chippa equalized through Khaya Mfecane, leveling the score at 1-1.

Despite the equalizer, Sundowns almost took the lead through Zwane, but Chippa’s goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made a crucial save to deny the Sundowns captain.

The Brazilians continued to push for a winner, but Chippa’s defense held strong.

The draw means Sundowns will face AmaZulu on Tuesday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, while Chippa United will travel to Durban to face Durban City at Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday.
