Sundowns Thrash CBE, Boosting CL Knockout Hopes

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have significantly improved their chances of advancing to the knockout stages of the Women’s CAF Champions League. They achieved a resounding 4-0 victory over CBE FC of Ethiopia in their second Group B match on Wednesday.

All four goals were scored in the first half. This impressive performance came after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Egyptian side Masar in their opening group stage match. That defeat marked Sundowns’ first loss in the Champions League group stage.

Melinda Kgadiete opened the scoring for Sundowns in the 17th minute, followed by Joyce Rabale’s goal eight minutes later. Kgadiete doubled her tally in the 30th minute, and Lelona Daweti added the fourth goal just six minutes later.

Despite their dominant performance, Sundowns eased off in the second half. The South African side, who have only suffered two defeats in the Champions League since its inception in 2021, could have extended their lead but appeared to opt to conserve energy.

Sundowns’ next match is against Edo Queens FC of Nigeria in three days’ time. This encounter could be decisive in determining the group winner, as Edo Queens defeated CBE in their opening match. Masar and CBE will face each other in the other final group stage game on Saturday.
