Jordaan Granted R20ks Bail

SAFA president Danny Jordaan has been granted R20,000 bail after he appeared in front of the court on Wednesday.

Jordaan’s co-accused Gronie Hluyo, who is SAFA CFO, and businessman Trevor Neethling have seen their passport handed to the court so that he cannot leave the country. They too were granted R20,000 bail each.

However, Jordaan can only travel abroad on SAFA matters and has to share the full itinerary with the investigation officer.

The SAFA president appeared in front of the court on Wednesday following the crime investigation unit, Hawks, which has been looking into claims of fraud and theft at Safa between 2014 and 2018 amounting to R1.3m.

He was alongside Hluyo and Neethling, who are all co-accused, in court.

In March, Hawks raided Safa offices in Johannesburg, confiscating a laptop, USBs, external hard drives and documents.

Jordaan is alleged to have hired a private security company for his protection and a public relations company without authorization from the Safa board.

National Prosecution Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane was confident in their case against Jordaan and revealed why they brought the president to court.

“The allegations stem from SLA that was signed on behalf of SAFA by Mr. Jordaan as well as Mr Neethling who is the director of Grit Communications,” said Mjonondwane outside the court on Wednesday.

“We are alleging them as the state that agreement, they entered into what was an unlawful and unauthorized agreement and Mr. Jordaan could not sign such an agreement.

“The two authorized personnel are the Chief Financial Officer (Gronie Hluyo) as well as Chief Executive Officer (Lydia Monyepao). Furthermore, as the state, we are alleging that an amount of R1.1 million was used for his (Jordaan) personal gain where in great communication was not authorized to provide the PR communication service to SAFA.

“Therefore, such services were provided for his capacity, so it was for his benefit and not for the benefit of SAFA.”

The matter has been adjourned until 5 December.

Jordaan has maintained innocence in all of this. It will be interesting to see what transpires next as he has been under huge pressure from the public who have called him to step down.

Jordaan was re-elected with a landslide vote in June 2022 and said this term would be his last at the time.

However, Sportswire has been informed that Jordaan is seeking another term in 2026 when his current term expires. It will be interesting to see if he will seek another term in office after these allegations of fraud and theft.
