Sundowns Thump Mbabane In CAF Champions League
Mamelodi Sundowns thumped Mbabane Swallows 4-0 in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
The game was played at Sundowns’ home stadium due to Eswatini not having a CAF-approved stadium.
Sundowns made use of that, scoring early in the game after they were awarded a penalty in the third minute. Lucas Ribeiro Costa stepped up and slotted it home for Sundowns.
Sundowns returned quickly with a smooth interplay that saw new signing Arthur Sales faced with the goalkeeper Mathebela Sandanezwe, but there was no joy this time.
The second goal came in the 16th minute after a corner kick was whipped in by Ribeiro, finding Mosa Lebusa who had no trouble cushioning it to the net.
Five minutes before the end of the first half, Sundowns tripled their lead through Iqraam Rayners blasted his first goal from close range from Ribeiro’s cutback cross, further asserting their dominance in the game.
Despite Mbabane’s double substitution in the second half, they could not stop Sundowns’ dominant run as Ribeiro got his brace in the 54th minute at the far corner, further extending their lead.
Despite the second leg yet to be played, the game looks sealed from a Sundowns’ perspective, as the Eswatini side would have to produce a near-perfect performance to overturn this deficit.
