Sundowns Turn Down “Massive Offer” For Mokoena

Veteran football agent Glyn Binkin has confirmed that Mamelodi Sundowns rejected a significant offer for midfielder Teboho Mokoena during the January transfer window.

Binkin, who served as Bafana Bafana team manager when South Africa won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations, described the proposal as “significant” but said he understood why Sundowns were unwilling to sell mid-season.

“They wouldn’t allow him to go now, which I understand because it’s the middle of the season and they want to do well in the CAF Champions League and other competitions,” said Binkin, who also represents Aubrey Modiba.

However, Binkin admitted that Mokoena, now 29, is at a stage in his career where timing is crucial.

“Hopefully, after the World Cup, there may be movement because he’s not getting any younger. It can also work as a blessing for the club — if someone like Teboho and Aubrey leave, it creates opportunities for others.

“Jayden Adams is seen as a replacement for Teboho Mokoena. He is back in the side and doing well. Teboho won’t be there forever, and the club will have to plan for life beyond these players. For now, he will focus on the World Cup.”

Binkin expressed hope that a potential move could materialise after the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, where Mokoena is expected to play a key role for Bafana Bafana, provided he remains injury-free.

Mokoena has been a mainstay for Bafana Bafana despite a previous administrative setback, when he featured in a World Cup qualifier against Lesotho in March that resulted in South Africa forfeiting the match and receiving a fine. He was named in the Team of the Tournament as Bafana secured the bronze medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.

When asked about the origin of the January offer, Binkin declined to reveal the interested club.

“I can’t say,” he stated.

Mokoena recently extended his contract with Sundowns — a deal renewed 18 months ago — which runs until 2029, unless a transfer materialises before then.

He joined Sundowns from SuperSport United in January 2022 and has since enjoyed a trophy-laden spell, winning four league titles, the African Football League and the Nedbank Cup in 2022.

In total, Mokoena has made 167 appearances for the Brazilians, scoring 17 goals and providing 20 assists.
