The Redemption Of Appollis: How 18-Month Exile Forged Bafana’s New Offensive Catalyst

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has lauded the remarkable rise of star attacker Oswin Appollis, describing the player’s journey from being clubless to a national hero as “amazing.”

Appollis has been a standout performer for both Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates, recently scoring the goal that secured a 1-1 draw for Hugo Broos’ side against Panama in a FIFA-sanctioned World Cup warm-up match at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.

He also found the net when Bafana sealed qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in October last year against Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium, leaving goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari with no chance.

Appollis is expected to play a key role again when Broos names his side to face the same North American opponents at a sold-out DHL Stadium on Tuesday, and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup in June.

These achievements come after a difficult period in which he spent 18 months without a club, before Kwanele Kopo brought him to Pretoria Callies in the Motsepe Foundation Championship to help revive his career.

He seized the opportunity and has not looked back since.

“It has been amazing,” said Williams.

Appollis joined Orlando Pirates at the start of the season from Polokwane City, where he had already made a name for himself, including being part of the Bafana Bafana squad that won a bronze medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Although he was not a key figure at the time, he has since grown in stature, further boosted by his move to one of the country’s most supported clubs, Pirates.

He came off the bench to provide two assists as Pirates defeated Stellenbosch FC 3-0 in the MTN8 final in September.

The 24-year-old has featured in 35 matches across all competitions this season, scoring seven goals and registering nine assists.

Williams continued: “It shows his character. Three years ago, he was without a team and going through a difficult period. I had a lot of chats with him because we share a similar background and come from similar communities.

“I was also his captain at SuperSport United, so to see where he is now is amazing. You cannot praise him enough for what he has done in the last few years because it is not easy.

“In today’s world, it is very difficult to remain professional and perform consistently in every league game. It shows his level—he has been consistent over the past two years, including for the national team.”

Appollis has since earned 24 caps for Bafana Bafana, scoring eight goals and providing eight assists.

“It speaks volumes about the type of person he is,” Williams added. “He is one of the positive stories in South African football, and a perfect example for others.”
